Chrysalis Rescue: A Scavenger Hunt
Something wonderful, and a little heartbreaking, is happening on the construction fences along Strawberry Creek. Pipevine swallowtail caterpillars have climbed the chain-link and scaffolding to form their chrysalises, with no idea they've picked the worst real estate on campus. A pipevine swallowtail can stay sealed inside its chrysalis for up to seven years, a long time to be clinging to temporary construction fencing that could come down any day. So this Friday, we hunt: these chrysalises are masters of disguise, dressed up like curled dead leaves. We'll comb the fences, scaffolding, and pillars, gently collect every one we find, and bring them home to safe stewardship until they're ready to fly. Every one we find is a butterfly saved. No experience needed. Just bring sharp eyes, water, sun protection, and a sense of wonder. All ages welcome.
Pipevine Restoration (Weekly)
Join us for our weekly pipevine habitat restoration session at UC Berkeley. We'll be planting California pipevine (Aristolochia californica) to support the endangered California pipevine swallowtail butterfly (Battus philenor hirsuta). All skill levels welcome โ bring gloves and water!
